I don't think that's the case though, I guess some reviewers get very hung up on looking at the devices in a lab and don't look at them as a whole - some camera reviewers are like that in that they're very thorough looking at the cameras from purely a technical and image quality point of view without looking at the devices as a whole. Using the Media Foundation decoder and Ffmpeg encoder is a good compromise between quality and speed.Click to expand.I've wondered the same, I was amused to see the top comment on the article I mentioned that put the GoPro top for no reason said 'Good to see GoPro are keeping up their reviewer payments'. If you want your video faster, use Media Foundation for everything.

For PC users, if you want high quality and don’t mind waiting, use Ffmpeg for everything. Summary Over all, if you have a laptop, DXVA is likely your best option. Slower on machines with dedicated graphics cards. Extremely fast on laptops and other devices with integrated graphics hardware. Fastest performance for PCs with newer CPUs, very very slow for machines with older or slower CPUs.ĭXVA: (Really really fast on laptops / notebooks) Uses graphics hardware with comparable quality to ffmpeg. CPU power is the limiting factor on speed. Uses lots of memoryįfmpeg: (Very fast on PCs with decent CPUs) Higher quality with no resolution constraints. Does not work with videos larger than 1080p. Media Foundation: (Fast over all performance, but low quality and can't read videos that are too big) Uses graphics hardware, but with lower quality (causes some color quality loss causing videos to look gray). Produces smaller files than Media Foundation.ĭecoder (affects export/sharing and playback): These constraints are caused by Microsoft, so they cannot be fixed by us.įfmpeg: Slow (extremely slow at higher quality settings), high quality.

Cannot create videos bigger than 4GB on Windows 7, and cannot create videos larger than 1920x1080 or frame rates greater than 120fps. To solve this you need to make space on the your hard drive where you store your clips. At some point the import button will be grayed out and you should get a hover bubble over it saying "There is not enough space in the Clip Library folder to import the selected clips". You can check this by clicking "Import Selection" then selecting all the clips you wanted to select. The only reason I found for this is there is not enough space on the disk where the files will be imported to import them. I cannot import new clips, the camera is connected and ON but the "Import New" button is grayed out and unclickable, what do I do? Additionally you may need G-metrix data imported to have stabilization available as u/curiosity_opfer points out below. Not all video modes may support video stabilization.

Virb Edit software stabilization is not available/grayed out, why? If you deleted that file there is no way to get it back. Or once you have the clip you can import it manually by finding the correct g-metrix file on your camera. For g-metrix you have to Import clips into Virb Edit. If you copy & paste the clip into the editor that will give you the audio & video but not g-metrix. G-Metrix data has to be imported with the clip or added manually later. Think of G-metrix as the third track: Video, Audio, and G-metrix. G-Metrix data is not available for a clip, what do I do? Seeing as how it's receiving regular updates I think it's here to stay. I hate how little or scattered documentation there is on Virb Edit, it is a powerful tool and I would argue the best action camera editor out there right now.
